PROJECT DAP- The Disabled Are People Too
One of the first things that worried us was the level of street begging by people living with disability especially children in Kebbi State. In response to this, we began #PROJECT#DAP- The Disabled Are People Too with the intent of leading advocacies for the inclusivity of persons living with disability. We launched an empowerment program targeted at helping people with special needs see beyond their disability, build positive self-esteem, learn vocational skills, become self-reliant and reach their highest potentials. We held bi-weekly training sessions for students at the Kebbi State School of Special Needs. The duration of this training program was for seven months. We reached about 500 students.
To reach a wider audience outside the students at the Special Needs School, we launched the #PROJECT#DAP Table Talk, a social awareness television program on KBTV which focused on the rights of people living with disabilities, social inclusion and access to education. The TV show aired for ten months reaching an average of 11,000 viewers. We successfully held a public summit tagged: Beyond Your Disability that brought together the disability community with a view of strengthening the community’s effort in helping its members attain self-reliance. The summit had 55 persons in attendance. The summit was covered by Nigerian Television Authority(NTA).
In June,2020 we carried out a one-month online awareness campaign on Learning Disabilities. We created animation videos educating the public about the signs of learning disabilities and ways parents can help their children improve in this regard.
